Mycorrhizae are fungi that form symbiotic relationships with plants. The fungus attaches to plant roots and forms hyphae that can help draw nutrients to the plant roots. In exchange, the fungi will take up carbohydrates it cannot produce on its own from the plant.
Protecting mycorrhizal fungi
- Test soil and only fertilize with what is needed
- Avoid soil compaction or flooding (do not stand on garden beds!)
- Do not till soil
